Desk rules
Captions carry time, direction, and vantage point. Faces of bystanders are cropped or blurred when they are not part of the verified story. Emergency scenes are not photographed. Camera backs are checked before each outing — see the plates below.
Matching photos to copy
Beat editors may not publish a frame until the Photo Desk confirms capture time and location log. If a document references a site the desk cannot reach safely at night, the piece runs without photo rather than with a misleading stock substitute.
Readers may request caption corrections via [email protected]. Fix notices apply to captions as well as text.
Outbound photographers carry location logs separate from camera EXIF — desk policy treats the written log as authoritative when the two disagree. Rain and windscreen frames illustrate context only; they do not imply weather-related claims beyond what official advisories state.
Contact sheets stay on the desk until captions are matched; only then do digital files move to the beat folder for publication. This delay is deliberate, not backlog.
Equipment on the fourth floor
